Amsterdam

After flying out of Minneapolis at 4PM on Friday, we arrived in Amsterdam at 6AM on Saturday for a five hour layover. We took a train from the airport to the city, and strolled through the city for a couple of hours. Left is a map showing where we walked.

Pictures we took along the way start here. This is the square in front of the Amsterdam station. That's Rita on the left.

Amsterdam Station

Far left is the first sight you see upon leaving the station: a canal, very old buildings, and a LOT of bikes. That's Rita in the foreground.
Center is the train station, a grand old building. Those are not clock faces on the towers, they are weather vanes.

Walking in Amsterdam

Left is a narrow alley with restaurants and shops.
Right is the famous "Dam". Brian was here in 1970, and swears the steps were grass back then. But they are stone now, and look like they always have been.

Walking in Amsterdam

Amsterdam has big old buildings, and itty-bitty cars.

Walking in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is remarkable for several things. Far left, canals run through the whole city.
Center, old buildings sag and lean at various angles.

Walking in Amsterdam

Left, an ancient building near the farmers market and by modern architecture.
Right, houseboats in the canal. Brian claims the near one was there in 1970, and a guy illegally buying Eurail passes lived there.

Walking in Amsterdam

Center, we finish the circuit, ending up back at the depot.
Right, bikes near the depot, lots and lots of bikes.

So long, Amsterdam

Left, Rita tips a busker.
Right, a train takes us back to the airport.
