Slator Family Archive I

This is a collection of 34 photos provided to me (Brian M. Slator) for scanning into digital form, before sending on to my brother (Kevin T. Slator), sent to me by my Aunty Helen.

The technology: the photos were scanned with a MicroTek 9800 using VueScan software. They were scanned at 600 dpi which is approximately the resolution of the original camera. Each image has been re-rendered as a 'thumbnail' and a 640 pixel image. Therefore, there are three versions of each photo on this site: thumbnail, medium, and (for purposes of historical research), the high resolution originals.

The photos each have a text field, where I have tried to decode and reproduce what was written on the back of each one.
In addition, I have grouped a few of them, that seemed to 'go together'.

For example, photos #5 and #6 were quite probably taken in the same place, and within minutes of each other.
Similarly, #10 and #11 appear to have been taken minutes apart.
And #12, #13, #14, and #15 appear to have been taken in the same place (the front of a house), and were also probably taken as two groups at two different times. The interesting thing being these photos have unknown characters.

It might be that the six photos #16-#21 were all taken in the same place, but at different times; and #23, #24, and #25 appear to have been taken together, out on a picnic one day. Mother Slator does not look happy, or is that my imagination? Meanwhile, the same door appears to be the backdrop for photos #26 and #27, and the same fence appears in the background of #28 and #29.

I have commented on a few of the photos and their captions. If you have comments, please send them along, and I will post them here.

Comment: the Chris/Mary/Ellen is improbable as the boy appears to be older than the other two (and Mary was the oldest), so this might be Chris/Ellen/Michael, or some other combination

Comment: judging by the angle of the sun/shadow, this photo and the previous one were taken at just about the same time (perhaps the young boy was allowed to snap this photo by the lady, who may have taken the first one)

Notes on the Site

Most of the photos have notes written in blue ink by Helen Slator. Some of the photos also have notes from Mary Slator (note the two different hand writings on the back of photo #13, #31, and #33).

Many of the photos also have a penciled name, usually Brian or Kevin. This is from a session where Helen let us go through the photos and claim a few.

You will notice that many of the photos have printed numbers on the back. Are these batch numbers that would allow us to reliably group the photos into 'rolls of film' or something similar? If so, it appears as though #3 was on the same roll as #31, and that #30 should be grouped with #18 and #19.

Some of the 'blurry blue ink' on the photo backs is caused, I am convinced, because the photos were stored back to back at one time or another. There are a few cases, but the easiest to see is between photo #28 and #29, where 'Michael and Danny' is printed on the back of #29, and appears as 'shadow text' on the back of #28.
