Ellen (Helen) Slator Memorial
(service: Monday, Sept. 8, 2008)

Ellen (Helen) Slator (b. Feb. 23, 1922, Ireland - d. Aug. 29, 2008, Winnipeg, Canada)

Ellen (Helen) Slator lived a full life, helping to raise her siblings after her mother passed away,
going off to war as a young woman, working and supporting herself in a long career at the University of Manitoba,
and providing a strong, religious, moral role-model at the center of her extended family.

She was kind, funny, smart, opinionated, argumentative, and never at a loss for words.

She will be missed.

Later that same day we visited the Hooper household

The evening before the memorial service we gathered at the Norwood Hotel and ate dinner together.

Kevin Slator wrote this message to Nancy Slator, who could not be there:

It was a nice memorial Mass ... The church was full or her friends and family, which was nice to see. There were three priests (or maybe two priests and a deacon), but ... the pastor was apparently away in Edmonton, tending to someone who was dying.

A decent organist and a wonderful woman singer did the music. Helen chose all the music, and also chose one song that would NOT be done -- Amazing Grace. The sololist did a version of "Lord of the Dance" that I've heard several times before (I think it's an Aaron Copeland arrangement) and love, ... I got a bit teary-eyed during this song and also during "On Eagles Wings," knowing that they meant so much to Helen.

After the memorial service we gathered in the church basement again for a reception.
